“Big elk” to mark gateway to Norway’s north

Elk to stand at a picnic spot halfway to Trondheim

The main road to northern Norway from Oslo will soon be adorned with the world’s largest sculpture of an elk. The elegant ten-metre-high and 12-metre-long polished-steel beast will stand beside the Riksvei 3 road.

It is three years since Norwegian artist Linda Bakke first came up with the idea for the “big elk”. But now the final deal for the project has been signed with the art fund of the local Hedmark Sparbank, while the Norwegian Public Roads Association has agreed to provide the necessary land.

The elk will stand beside a picnic spot in Stor-Elvdal, about halfway to Trondheim. It will probably be in place in the second half of this year.
