“New” Germanwings targets business travel

Lufthansa LCC to get new identity from 1 July 2013

Lufthansa plans to give its low-cost subsidiary Germanwings a completely new identity as it transfers its non-hub routes to the carrier from July 1 next year, expands its fleet and unveils a new livery. Germanwings will also reach out to more business passengers in its battle against cut-throat low-cost competition in Europe.
From July Germanwings will allow business-class customers to bypass costly options such as first-class lounges, priority check-in, a la carte catering and a second piece of luggage – yet still take a business-class seat.
“Business travellers now are being ordered to fly economy class by their companies,” Germanwings CEO Thomas Winkelmann explains.
According to Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa board member for passenger business, out of more than €900 million in savings his division will contribute to the group’s cost-cutting, €200 million will be from Germanwings. As reported yesterday, Lufthansa will also launch a “premium economy” class for intercontinental flights with a price category lower than business but higher than economy.
