“Sharp growth” in Swedish air travel

International travel so far in 2014 is up 8%

Passenger volumes at Swedish airport operator Swedavia’s ten airports were up 5% in September compared to the same month in 2013. A total of 3.3 million passengers flew in or out of the airports during the month, an increase of 163,000.

The number of international passengers was almost 2.1 million, an increase of 6%, while 1.2 million people flew domestically during the period, which is a 3% increase on the same month last year. So far this year, domestic travel is up 6% compared to the first nine months of 2013. International travel in 2014 is up a full 8%.

“The sharp growth shows what importance air travel has for Swedish access, both domestically and to elsewhere in the world,” said Torborg Chetkovich, chief executive of Swedavia. “International air travel has been on the rise for a long time, and now the trend for domestic air travel is also clearly positive.”

So far in 2014, the number of passengers at Swedavia airports has increased 8% to 26.9 million, the operator reports. The number of international passengers has risen 8% to 17.3 million, domestic passengers 6% to 9.6 million.
