Action needed over US airport arrivals

US Travel Association president urges Congress to act

The president and CEO of the US Travel Association, Roger Dow, has told Congress about the importance of improving US arrival procedures. Doing so is vital for the economy, he said during a hearing before a house committee on transport security. A number of airports in the US are reporting that passengers arriving after long-haul flights often endure delays of up to three hours due to customs processing. Dow urged that funding must be found to hire enough customs officers to cut wait times to just 20 minutes.
Global travel boomed during the last decade, with a 40% growth between 2000 and 2010. Yet the United States’ share of global international long-haul travel fell from 17% in 2000 to 12.4% in 2010.
