After MH370: Europe to improve black box rules

Proposal to make it easier to find black boxes underwater

The European Aviation Safety Agency has come up with a proposal to make it easier to locate black boxes from missing aircraft, the news agency Reuters reports.

In what Reuters describes as the strongest official reaction to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 so far, the proposals will bring into force recommendations initially suggested by France after the tragic loss of an Air France aircraft in 2009, but which were never implemented.

These include the addition of a new “pinger” frequency that makes it easier to search underwater for black boxes. The agency is also calling for an increase in the minimum amount of recording time on cockpit voice recorders.
