Agents lose money by ignoring rail sales

Amadeus study advises agents to sell more rail

Travel agents are not getting the most out of their earnings because they are ignoring the rail market, a report by Amadeus says. There will be strong growth in demand for rail over the next seven years, the report explains, from both business and leisure travellers. Amadeus is using the report’s findings to stress that there have been big improvements in the way rail tickets can be booked, ticketed and distributed, making it easier for agents to sell them.
“We know that historically it has been complex and time consuming to book rail and the lack of incentives have hindered the potential growth of rail bookings through travel agents,” Thomas Drexler, director of Amadeus Rail, said. “However, now that travel sellers are seeing an increased demand for rail, from both leisure and business travellers, and are noting an increased desire for air-rail comparison and combinations, it is time to embrace the opportunity available to them.”
The study, called “The Rail Journey to 2020”, predicts 21% growth in long-distance rail traffic in Europe by 2020, to over 1.36 billion passengers.
The passenger rail industry in Europe will be positively impacted by a combination of trends, including liberalisation, new market entrants, completion of new high-speed lines, new hubs, and air-rail and rail-rail cooperation.
