AI concierge will help guests meet up

A new hotel brand will have an artificial intelligence-powered concierge to help guests meet other likeminded guests.

Fujita Kanko, a leading Japanese tourism company, is launching Tavinos, a new millennial-friendly brand with an artificial intelligence concierge tasked with, among other things, helping guests find a travel buddy, TTG Asia reports.

With the new brand, set to debut with two futuristic properties in Tokyo, the company is hoping to blend “the social aspect of hostels with style and technology”.

Besides matching guests interested in similar activities, the AI concierge on the front desk will also perform automated check-in and check-out as well as provide local information.

The “minimal staffing” enabled by the technology will allow the hotels to keep rates affordable in prime urban locations, Fujita Kanko says, averaging at around 10,000 yen (€78) per night for a twin or double room.

The first hotel, the 188-room Tavinos in Hamamatsu-cho, Tokyo, is due to open in August 2019, followed by the 278-room Tavinos in Asakusa, Tokyo, in May 2020.

Meet ‘n’ manga
Rooms are an average of 12 square metres, and the public spaces will be covered in manga art while the lobby lounge will offer continental breakfasts and double as a communal area for guests to meet and mingle.

“There are already affordable accommodations throughout Japan, but travelling millennials are hungry for the community of a hostel and the professionalism and expertise of an experienced hotelier,” explains Akira Segawa, president and chief executive of Fujita Kanko.

“Tavinos will offer what outgoing and adventurous travellers want – the opportunity to meet interesting people, plan activities together and explore.”
