Air Canada to fly “Rouge” from 2013

Rouge will operate Air Canada’s leisure routes

Air Canada has released the name of its new low-cost carrier, which will begin flights to Europe and the Caribbean from July 1 next year. Rouge will fly to Venice, Edinburgh, Athens, Cuba, the Dominican Republic; Jamaica and Costa Rica. Tickets for these leisure destinations have now gone on sale, with further destinations likely to be announced.
Loss-making Air Canada hopes that Rouge will lead it to sustained profitability in the face of heavy leisure-based competition from the likes of Transat, WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Travel, and as WestJet prepares to launch a Canadian regional airline, Encore. Rouge will have 50 aircraft in three to five years, according to Air Canada, which is due to take delivery of new Boeing 787s from 2014.
