Air France threatens to close three French bases

Airline warns unions it may have to close regional bases
Air France has told unions that it will have to close its regional bases at Marseilles, Nice and Toulouse airports if they refuse to agree to drastically cut back operations there.
The bases were created in 2011 for point-to-point flights, as Air France tried to challenge its low-cost competitors. But the bases failed to deliver. Recently the airline opted to cut significantly cut their international routes – presenting a challenge instead to pilots and unions.
“The economic equilibrium of operating flights out of regional bases was deemed impossible,” an Air France spokeswoman told ATW.
Air France offered two proposals to the pilots, but a May 13 deadline passed without an agreement. A similar draft agreement is today being given to cabin crew.
“Without a signature, a proposal to close the regional bases will soon be presented to the relevant staff unions,” the spokeswoman said.
