Airberlin in “advanced” strategic talks

Carrier pushes back release of annual results

Airberlin says it is in advanced talks to discuss options that could have a substantial impact on the airline. It refuses to be more specific, but as a result of the talks it is pushing back release of its annual results by a week to March 27.

The airline is almost 30% owned by Etihad Airways. It is facing tough competition from other low-cost carriers such as easyJet, which is expanding in Germany.

Airberlin posted its first profit in five years in 2012, but only by selling a majority stake in its frequent flyer program to Etihad. It has warned that it will revert to a loss for 2013 unless it finds additional sources of income.
