Airline staff accused of drug smuggling

Air hostesses and technicians involved in Pakistan racket

Large amounts of heroin have been smuggled to Europe and other international destinations via the Middle East, police in Pakistan believe, with flight attendants and technicians using the country’s national carrier Pakistan International Airlines. A former technician employed by the airline, Gulzar Ahmed, was arrested at Allama Iqbal Airport in Lahore on Friday as he attempted to board an aircraft heading for Abu Dhabi. He was carrying 3kg of heroin in the lining of his suitcase. It is believed that a country in Europe was his final destination.
At Islamabad Airport six months ago, police arrested an air hostess and her husband who were allegedly carrying 8kg of heroin in their luggage as they were boarding a flight for Barcelona via Oman. The airline has not commented on Friday’s arrest, but it has given police a list of suspect employees.
