Airline to screen “Slow TV” Norway rail trip

Seven Hour Train Journey to Oslo to show on BA flights

On a long-haul flight most people head straight for the movies, but British Airways is hoping it can attract passengers with a new, slower kind of program.

From July it will screen the surprise Norwegian TV hit Seven Hour Train Journey to Oslo, which follows the entire duration of a scenic train ride, from Oslo to Bergen, with snowy Nordic landscapes and twisting tunnels.

It is estimated that over a million Norwegians have tuned in to watch the show at some point when it was originally aired on the local channel NRK.

British Airways will be first airline to air the journey. If popular, there’s an opportunity to expand Slow TV shows to other hits including a walk in the park, knitting and feeding birds.

“One of the team at our agency Spafax read about this unusual documentary that had become a cult hit in Norway and tracked it down,” British Airways’ inflight entertainment manager, Richard D’Cruze, explained.

“It fits perfectly with the ‘wallpaper’ style footage people find mesmerising inflight, such as our moving maps which customers watch for endless hours! There’s definitely a hypnotic, calming and entertaining quality to Slow TV that is perfect for inflight entertainment.”

“We didn’t see this one coming,” Rune Møklebust, NRK’s head of programming, told The Local. “It’s about five years since the program was commissioned and it still surprised us which direction the story takes. It was just a very strange and weird idea back then. Luckily we didn’t just throw the idea away like you do with most ideas you come up with late at night in the bar.”
