Airlines on alert over huge solar storm

Sun spews massive radiation cloud towards Earth

Airlines and energy suppliers are on high alert today as the biggest solar storm in five years reaches Earth. Flights and power lines are likely to be disrupted and there is an increased chance of the aurora borealis being seen further south than usual. The “coronal mass ejection” (CME) from the sun has resulted in a “massive amount of solar particles heading towards Earth”, something that is likely to go unnoticed by most people. But airlines have been advised to reroute aircraft if they are flying near the polar regions, which is where the solar storm’s radiation will be at its most intense.
Solar storms have also been known to cause communications problems, affecting radios, satellites, oil pipelines and GPS systems. The phenomenon is likely to last through the day.
