Airlines oppose rise in Singapore Chennai fees

Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Virgin and BA lead the charge

Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are among the international airlines protesting against an increase in airport charges proposed at Chennai. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority’s increase in charges at the newly refurbished Chennai airport is due to come into force in November. Lufthansa calls the increase “unreasonable”, saying it “would have a strong negative effect on the economy of the […] sector” and the Frankfurt-Chennai route.
The authority plans 118% and 48% rises in international and domestic landing charges, respectively, from 1 November. It is also considering a minimum landing fee of Rs5,000 (US$90) per landing, as well as raising parking and housing charges for planes by 83%. Higher user development fees of Rs165 and Rs667 will be imposed on every domestic and international passenger, respectively, from 1 January 2013.
Chennai’s attempt to raise charges follows a wave of substantial fee hikes at Indian airports, including New Delhi and Mumbai.
