European Commission publishes new clearer guidelines

The European Commission has published clearer guidelines on when air passengers can rightly claim compensation for cancellations and long delays, and when such events are beyond an airline’s control. Now the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority says it wants airlines to look again at previous passenger compensation claims they have already rejected.

Up to now, the CAA has agreed with airlines’ judgments on whether such claims are justified in around 50% of cases. It is hopeful that the new guidelines will speed up the compensation process for passengers.

Among other things, the new guidelines – which the CAA is putting on its website – say that passengers can claim compensation for delays and cancellations due to technical issues which arise as a result of the airline’s failure to maintain the aircraft.
