Airport staff held over drug smuggling

Smuggling operation uncovered at Sydney Airport

Large quantities of drugs were smuggled through Australia’s biggest airport thanks to corrupt customs officials, it has been claimed. Eight people have so far been arrested at Sydney Airport following a two-year investigation, with more expected to be detained.
The drugs – and possibly also weapons – were smuggled through the airport in suitcases and carry-on bags, with officials using their knowledge of security to allow them to pass through undetected. Customs and quarantine officers and members of the public are among those arrested. According to media reports, a number of Sydney Airport customs officers had been working with organised crime groups to import the drugs. Up to 20 officials are suspected of involvement.
