Airports running as normal but security intense

Boston bombings during marathon event cause chaos

Frequent travel adviser Chris McGinnis says that there are currently no reports of longer lines at Bay Area airports following the two city-centre bomb blasts during the marathon yesterday. Boston experienced a short “ground stop” lasting about an hour, but operations then returned to normal. A Federal Aviation Administration airport-delay map shows only green dots across the country, McGinnis says.
For people travelling to Boston this week, McGinnis reports that some Boston hotels are already offering no-questions-asked refunds. If a traveler has a reservation close to the sites of the bombings, “I would cancel and ask for refund”, he advises. “If you are stuck with a non-refundable hotel reservation from a third party site (like Expedia, Travelocity, Hotwire), I would call the online agency and ask to be moved to another nearby hotel at the same rate.”
Virgin America is first among the airlines to be waiving change fees for travel to or from Boston on April 15-17.
Regarding airport security, “best news is that we are currently in a relatively slow travel season… spring break has just concluded, so airports are relatively uncrowded and quiet. Expect to see a very visible police presence in most major downtown areas and famous, popular sites, as well as airports”, McGinnins says. “The situation is still very fluid and subject to change.”
