Royal Caribbean had been late paying fees
The most senior law court official in the scenic Norwegian fjord town of Ålesund boarded and seized one of the world’s biggest cruise ships yesterday, demanding money from its owner Royal Caribbean.
The town bailiff said the cruise line had been late paying pilot fees from the previous year and duly arrested the $828 million 15-deck Independence of the Seas when it sailed into port.
Royal Caribbean owed the Norwegian Coastal Administration around NOK 600,000 (€74,000), which should have been paid last October.
Immediately after the bailiff boarded the ship, the captain contacted Royal Caribbean and the money was paid within an hour.
