American tourist dies in Nordic cruise accident

Dinghy visiting fjord in Svalbard archipelago capsizes

An American tourist in her sixties died during an Arctic cruise when a dinghy she boarded to visit a fjord in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago capsized. Twelve other people on the boat survived, three of whom were slightly injured.
The dinghy was hit suddenly by a large wave, local officials said. The tourists had been on the Sea Spirit cruise ship and had boarded the dinghy to take a closer look at the fjord.
The passengers were thrown into the glacial waters before being washed ashore by the waves. The precise cause of death of the woman is not known.
