Asia’s “first sports hotel” aims for FITs

Thanyapura Sports Hotel opens its doors in Phuket

Calling itself Asia’s first sports hotel, the Thanyapura Sports Hotel in Phuket has officially opened its doors. The 77-room property is aiming at active leisure tourists as well as professional athletes.
It is part of the 23-hectare Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club, which includes eight sports academies and facilities including a FIFA-standard football pitch, an International Rugby Board-standard pitch, a 50m Olympic-standard swimming pool, 500m cushioned athletics track, six tennis courts and a 900-sqare-metre fitness centre.
“We’re not operating in a typical market so going through regular channels, such as travel consultants, isn’t really going to work on the whole,” Robert Hauck, Thanyapura’s president, explains, adding that Thanyapura is working with strategic partners in the sports world.
Sports clients make up 80% of the guests, but the hotel is targeting a mix of 40% FITs and 60% sports travellers in the medium term.
