Avianca owner considers buying Alitalia or LOT

Or German Efromovich may create a brand new airline

The owner of the Colombian airline Avianca is thinking about taking over either Alitalia or LOT to raise his profile in Europe, according to a Polish press report.

German Efromovich, a Colombian-Brazilian entrepreneur told the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita that he was “certainly looking at Alitalia and LOT”, but another option could be to create a brand new airline.

“We must make a decision regarding our future purchase no later than the first two months of 2014,” he said. “I must boost the presence of my airline in Europe, either through acquisitions or by starting a new company.”

Efromovich was born and raised in South America in a family of Polish Jews. He acquired Polish citizenship in order to facilitate his bid for the Portuguese airline TAP last year.

Poland said last week that it may consider privatising LOT, while Alitalia’s need for investment of any kind is well known.
