Ban on low pants after tourist complaints

Town of Wildwood in USA makes residents pull up trousers

Wildwood in New Jersey, USA, has passed a law to make people pull up their trousers after many complaints from tourists about the town’s poor standards of dress.
The mayor of the town, Ernest Troiano, said that the fashion trend was putting off tourists. The new law, which was passed unanimously this week, is a matter of “decency”, he said.
“When you have good families who call you up and say, ‘I’ve been coming here 20 years, 30 years, 40 years and I’m not going to any longer because I’m not going to subject my children or my parents or grandparents to seeing some kid walk down the boardwalk with their butt hanging out,’ you have to do something.”
Under the new law, which comes into force next month, baggy trousers, swimsuits, shorts and skirts will have to rest no more than three inches below the waist. There is also a new rule stating that shirts must be worn on the Jersey shore boardwalk between the hours of 8pm and 5am.
