Bangkok beats London as top destination

Mastercard: Bangkok may be top for a long time
Bangkok has beaten London as the world’s most popular travel destination in 2016, according to an annual list by global payments firm Mastercard.
A wave of bomb blasts in southern Thailand, blamed on Muslim separatists, has had little impact on tourism to the Thai capital, and tourism remains one of the bright spots for the country, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.
Bangkok topped the Mastercard Index of Global Destination Cities, beating 132 cities including London, Paris and Dubai to be the city most visited by international travellers.
Thailand should see a record 33 million visitors this year, boosted especially by many more Chinese tourists. Bangkok is projected to receive 21.47 million international visitors, ahead of second-ranked London with 19.88 million.
“It isn’t a flash in the pan. Bangkok is in a strong position to be the top destination city for a long time,” said Mastercard economist Yuwa Hedrick-Wong. “There’s value for money, especially for visitors coming from high-income countries.”
