Banksy opens Bethlehem barrier hotel

Artist hopes Walled Off Hotel will inspire dialogue
The 10 rooms at the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem have a depressing but unique view – the barrier wall that separates Israel from the Palestinian territories.
Banksy, a British artist famous for his social commentary but who fiercely guards his anonymity, has opened his first hotel just metres away from the wall. On the other side is the rest of Bethlehem and the West Bank.
The ten rooms come with artworks by Banksy, Sami Musa and Dominique Petrin and range from budget to presidential. The hotel bar is decorated with security cameras and slingshots.
The aim is to bring jobs and tourists to a town whose sightseeing has been ravaged by tight Israeli controls on travel between the Israeli and Palestinian territories. The artist also wants to create dialogue, and his biggest target market is young Israelis who would otherwise be spending their weekends clubbing in Tel Aviv.
