Bavaria’s gateway to the world scores double success

Munich is Europe’s first five-star airport and near top globally
Munich Airport and its operating company FMG have two reasons to celebrate. First, the London-based Skytrax Institute has given it a Five-Star Airport designation, making the Bavarian hub the first airport in Europe to earn this title.
Second, MUC defended its ranking as the top airport in Europe and number three in the world in the 2015 World Airport Awards. Dr Michael Kerkloh, FMG’s president and chief executive, accepted the award from Edward Plaisted, chief executive of Skytrax, at a special ceremony at Munich Airport.
Skytrax awards stars to airports, similar to hotel ratings, for quality of service, overall experience and the efficiency of the handling processes, to rank international airports in terms of passenger comfort. The highest five-star rating was previously awarded only to four Asian airports: Singapore, Seoul, Hong Kong and Tokyo-Haneda.
To join this exclusive group, Munich launched a comprehensive quality campaign in 2013. Waiting areas were upgraded with comfortable seating, lounge chairs and USB outlets for mobile devices. To make it easier for people to find their way around, 13 “InfoGate” counters are positioned at various locations in the terminals allowing passengers to connect live via video conference with information service staff. At around 70 InfoGate terminals, visitors can access information on flights, navigation around the airport, shopping options and other services by touchscreen.
Munich’s top ratings were also reflected in the views of passengers who took part in a global survey for the World Airports Awards 2015, conducted by Skytrax. With more than 13 million passengers responding, Munich repeated its number-one ranking in Europe and number three globally. This was the eighth time in the last 10 years that Munich Airport has been named Best Airport in Europe.
