Opening date of 27 October 2013 is “no longer viable”
The joint owners of Berlin Brandenburg Airport – Berlin, Brandenburg and the German government – met the management team from Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH yesterday to discuss progress on the construction of the new BER airport. As a consequence, it became clear that the airport’s proposed opening date of 27 October 2013 was “no longer viable”.
The airport opening had already been delayed three times and it is two years behind schedule. Industry experts say the delays have added €1.8 billion in costs to €4.2 billion after a German court tightened noise protection rules. The European Commission recently approved a €1.2 billion capital injection requested by the owners of the airport. A revised opening date is likely to be announced later this month, the airport said.
