Berlitz launches agent-friendly river-cruise guide

AMA Waterways, Viking River Cruises, TUI ships score well

A new guidebook will offer agents reviews and a star rating system for 280 river ships operating in Europe. Berlitz is this month publishing “River Cruising in Europe” and has made it trade-friendly by only reviewing ships sold through the trade, TTG Digital reports.

In introducing a star rating system, as ocean cruise ships already use, the guide should also give agents deeper insight into the quality of the services and amenities available on the ships.

The vessels are judged and rated over five areas including accommodation, cuisine and service, with a maximum score of 100 to be achieved in each area. Ships are then graded on a star system, earning anything from one to five stars, although not a single ship has won a full five stars.

Berlitz has rated AMA Waterways’ AmaPrima as the best ship on the rivers having awarded it a four-star plus award after it scored 422 points. AMA Waterways’ fleet holds all 11 top ranking positions in the four-star plus category.

In the four-star category Viking River Cruises’ Viking Freya, Viking Njord and Viking Skadi share top position. TUI Travel’s TUI Queen also stands out from the crowd as the 4-star ship has the best overall score in the accommodation category.
