Boeing in Oslo: we’re not satisfied with 787

“We’re not satisfied with the reliability level of the airplane”

Boeing is critical of its own aircraft, it has revealed. The reliability of its 787 Dreamliner is improving but still not satisfactory, Mike Fleming, the manufacturer’s VP for 787 support and services, said while in Oslo on Friday.

The Dreamliner’s reliability rate is now at around 98%, Fleming said. This means that two out of every 100 flights is delayed – better than the 97% reported in October but still short of the company’s target.

Fleming was in Oslo to meet client Norwegian, which has experienced numerous problems with its Dreamliners.

“I’ll tell you that’s not where we want the airplane to be. We’re not satisfied with that reliability level of the airplane,” he said. “The 777 today flies at 99.4% […] and that’s the benchmark that the 787 needs to attain.”

With its lighter body and sophisticated engines cutting fuel consumption by 20%, the 787 was supposed to be an aviation game-changer. But lithium-ion battery failures and the reliability of flight controls have caused headaches for airlines.
