Boeing under pressure as Airbus wins 2011

Doubts expressed about Boeing’s plans to rival the A320neo

Europe’s Airbus is an aviation giant that is now well ahead of its long-term American rival Boeing. Its aircraft sales in August were significantly ahead, thanks mainly to the success of its A320 family. Airbus sold over a thousand (1,015) aircraft between January and August, compared to Boeing’s 370.
In addition to the much-delayed Dreamliner, doubts have also been expressed about Boeing’s plans to rival the A320neo by manufacturing a more efficient version of its 737 narrow-body with a new engine in 2017. The chief executive of the engine maker Pratt & Whitney, David Hess, says that Boeing may have to reduce the reworked airliner’s lifespan if the engine is made smaller.
