Bridge to be visual gateway to airport

New bridge over access road to Göteborg Landvetter
A new bridge over the access road to Göteborg Landvetter Airport will create the impression of a gateway to western Sweden’s international airport besides building infrastructure in the area, airport operator Swedavia says.
The development to handle growing traffic is “going full speed” at Gothenburg’s airport, according to the operator, with the bridge now being constructed over the Flygplatsvägen access road.
Adjacent aprons, roundabouts, walkways and cycle lanes will also be built to handle the airport’s current and future growth.
“The bridge’s primary function is naturally transport, but given its location at the road entrance to the airport, the bridge will be a welcoming gateway to the Göteborg Landvetter Airport of the future and to the rest of the world,” says Charlotte Ljunggren, airport director.
“The bridge will welcome visitors, guide them and create a positive sense of anticipation – for locals and, of course, for people coming to western Sweden from other countries.”
With its design and use of materials, the structure will create an ellipse-shaped gateway that will “enhance the impression of being on one’s way, especially in the evening light”, Swedavia explains.
Materials selected include smooth concrete and black diabase, or dolerite. Preparatory work is now underway and the bridge will be completed and put into service in autumn 2017.
