Air safety regulator points to unlocked engine covers

Air safety regulators in the UK have ordered Airbus to tell all operators of its A320-family of aircraft to make safety checks. The move comes after it found that unlocked engine covers were the cause of the incident last week in which a British Airways flight to Oslo was forced into an emergency landing at London Heathrow.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch says in a report that two coverings or “cowls” on engines of the A319 were left unlatched after maintenance. It wants operators to double-check that the fan cowl doors are fully closed before every flight by visually checking the latches.
As reported, 75 passengers and five crew were unharmed in the incident and were evacuated using emergency chutes. But they had been shocked to see flames erupt from one of the engines shortly after takeoff from Heathrow.
