China Eastern joins SkyTeam with Beijing ceremony

SkyTeam boosts daily departures from Greater China by 10%

At a ceremony held in Beijing today, China Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines have officially joined the SkyTeam alliance. By accepting China’s second-biggest airline by passenger numbers, the alliance is increasing its daily departures from Greater China by 10%. China Eastern is the 14th airline to join SkyTeam, which plans to grow to 19 members by 2012. China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines bring 32 new destinations to the alliance’s global network, including two new international destinations; Macau and Colombo.
SkyTeam commented that the additions “firmly solidify our position as the #1 alliance for the Greater China region.” Members of other SkyTeam frequent flyer programs can now earn and redeem miles when travelling on China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines-operated flights. They can also access more than 465 lounges worldwide, including those offered by China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines at Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports.
