China proposal for Sweden-Denmark tunnel

One of the world’s biggest railway construction companies is to make a proposal for the HH-tunnel.

A Chinese company has agreed to make a proposal to build a tunnel between Helsingborg in Sweden and Helsingør in Denmark, a project that has been on the table for some years and is commonly known as the HH-tunnel.

The entity behind the move is China Railway Tunnel Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, one of the biggest railway construction companies in the world.

A tunnel at this narrow point between the two countries has been discussed multiple times. Without disrupting shipping, it would provide a second road and rail link crossing the strait between the two nations.

The state-owned Chinese group will put forward a report on the technical aspects of building the tunnel, News Øresund reports.

The company reportedly contacted the municipality in Helsingborg during the winter and afterwards sent representatives to the city to study existing materials related to the project.

Authorities in Sweden and Denmark say that a tunnel is needed to support traffic flows over the Øresund Bridge, according to the Swedish news agency TT.

Funding options
The two countries plan to jointly apply for EU funds for a further feasibility study. Besides the availability of government grants, a decision will be taken in the spring on whether to also consider further funding options.
