Coastal zones topic of conference in Sweden

Changing coasts and oceans is main topic at recent event

The main aim of a recent conference held in Stockholm at the end of last week was to review results from research carried out in the Indian Ocean region. The conference hosted a keynote address from Professor Rolph Payet, Seychelles’ minister for environment and energy, who spoke about the importance of capacity building, public awareness and the role of the media in ensuring the long-term sustainability of coastal zones and oceans.
Topics in the two-day conference included coastal and marine production of food; small-scale fisheries; overfishing on reefs; community-based aquacultures; coastal lagoons; and the conservation of seagrass. Journalists from Kenya, Tanzania, India, Sweden and Indonesia got the chance to share experiences on challenges they face while reporting on issues related to the environment. A panel discussion, “Changing Coasts and Oceans: how can we contribute to better understanding and improved management?” also took place. The conference was organized by the School of Natural Sciences at Sweden’s Linnaeus University with support from the Centre Party Research Foundation.
