Confusion over costly Swedish flight delays

Delays after IT problems halt Stockholm air traffic
A computer problem shut down Swedish airspace yesterday, causing chaos and costly delays. It has since been fixed, but aviation insiders are worried it could happen again.
A spokesperson for air traffic control operator Luftfartsverket said shortly after 13.30 that the communications issue causing the delay had been resolved. But for almost two hours no planes had been able to take off, though some were permitted to land.
Passengers were hit at the Stockholm airports Arlanda, Bromma and Skavsta and Gothenburg Landvetter. Some flights were diverted to Malmö.
Tomas Olsson, head of the Swedish Transport Agency, said the network failure was “an isolated case”. The cause of the problem has not yet been found or made public. But last November there were similar delays, blamed on a powerful solar storm.
“Someone needs to take responsibility and make sure this doesn’t happen again,” aviation writer Jan Ohlsson told news agency TT. “If airspace is closed it quickly becomes a really big problem. A break like this for only a few hours costs millions of kronor.”
