Cook reassures tourists after puppy hotel death

Dog thrown into crusher at one of the hotels it offers

Thomas Cook has moved to reassure customers of its commitment to animal welfare after news emerged that a dog was thrown into a rubbish crusher at one of the hotels it offers in Cyprus.

The operator said it was “extremely concerned” by the incident at the Anastasia Beach Hotel, which led to the death of the seven-month-old puppy. The dog was found by holidaymakers at the bottom of a bin but later died from its injuries.

There have been calls for a boycott of the Anastasia Beach Hotel and thousands have signed a petition calling for Cyprus to enforce animal cruelty laws.

“Once these allegations came to light, we immediately liaised with the Tsokkos Hotel Group, which is offering its full cooperation to the local authorities following the launch of a full investigation,” Thomas Cook said in a statement. “We have been informed that the staff members involved were immediately dismissed following the incident.”

The company said it had received enquiries from concerned customers, who were subsequently told it was an isolated incident.
