Airport saw 0.5% more pax in 2017, but the trend is downward

Coming at the end of a week of sensational year-end results from across the Nordic region, Copenhagen Airport’s stats seem like a bit of a flop.

Norway’s biggest airport, Oslo Gardermoen, welcomed 6.6% more passengers in 2017, to reach 27.5 million. Its more distant competitor Oslo Torp saw 35% more.

Iceland’s main airport at Keflavik welcomed 8.8 million passengers, up 28%, while Stockholm Arlanda saw 26.6 million, up 8%. Göteborg Landvetter also set a new record, at 6.76 million, up 6%.

CPH, however, registered passenger growth of only 0.5% in 2017, bringing the annual numbers of passengers up to just under 29.2 million.

The airport put a positive spin on the 29,177,833 travellers who passed through, giving the airport “growth for the eighth year in a row” and “the busiest year in the airport’s history”.

But the trend is downward, with passenger numbers falling away in the final months of the year. December saw 3.8% fewer passengers using the airport than the same month in 2016.

More fly intercontinental
Thanks to strong growth on intercontinental routes, CPH managed to stay on the plus side. There were around 185,000 more intercontinental passengers in 2017, up 6%.

New routes opened in 2017 to New Delhi and Agadir, while several airlines increased frequencies to Bangkok, Los Angeles and New York. This coming year, more routes are due to start including Hong Kong and Amman, and Air China has announced its arrival in Copenhagen with a new route to Beijing.

Passenger numbers on routes to China grew 5.3% to 283,000, and on routes to the US by 3.7% to 1,090,000.

But domestic routes tumbled 5.8% to 1,611,369, a trend CPH is trying to reverse in a “major campaign” with regional airports and domestic airlines, to “increase awareness of how fast and easy it is to fly around Denmark, through Copenhagen Airport and out into the world,” as CEO Thomas Woldbye puts it.

The number of transfer passengers fell 8.4% to 2,823,500, and as SAS accounts for 82% of the transfer traffic at CPH, part of the reason can be attributed to the Scandinavian airline’s operations.

Although Copenhagen remains that the biggest airport in the Nordic region, it has a transfer share that is now 19.4%, its lowest level ever.
