Viking ferry collides with boat in Sweden

Accident was probably due to foggy conditions

Three sailors had a lucky escape after a cruise ship smashed into their small boat in the Stockholm archipelago on Saturday morning.

The cruise vessel Grace had just left Stockholm on its way to Finland carrying almost 2,000 passengers when it collided with the boat, which quickly sank. Two men and a woman were rescued from the water by locals in their own boats and were later treated for shock.

Viking Line’s vessel Grace is fairly new, beginning operations at the start of 2013.

“Three people ended up in the water and the boat sank,” a member of the emergency services told the news agency TT.

Eyewitnesses said the accident was probably due to foggy conditions. One of them described the three sailors’ survival as “miraculous.” The collision took place about 200 metres from the shore, she said.

“We are of course very glad that these people survived,” Helena Kneck, Viking Line Sweden’s communications officer, said. “They really had guardian angels with them.”
