Cruise ships on order hits new record

Record order book now surges to 82 vessels
At the start of 2017, there were a record 73 cruise ships on order. Now that number has surged to 82, according to the 2017-2018 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.
Recent orders have come from major lines such as Carnival Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line, as well as a small unnamed luxury brand.
The 82 ships on order do not include a number of known options. The figures mean that the cruise industry is looking ahead at a decade of solid growth while older vessels are retired, the independently researched report suggests.
The new record eclipses the previous one of 70 ships on order, in 2016, which beat the 67 ships on order early in 2000.
However, the average size of the ships on order is staying at around 3,000 passengers, offset by smaller luxury and expedition ships.
