Cruises venture into deep Arctic north

Lindblad to explore Greenland, Northwest Passage

Melting sea ice around the Arctic is opening up new possibilities for expeditionary cruises. A partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic is introducing sailings to the Northwest Passage and Greenland in 2015.

A new cruise called Epic 80°N aboard the 148-passenger National Geographic Explorer will sail to northwest Greenland with visits to Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island and Lancaster Sound in the Canadian Arctic.

The same ship will also operate a 13-day sailing to Greenland and the Canadian High Arctic, including the eastern entrance of the fabled Northwest Passage and the Ilulissat Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Guests will experience unbridled 21st-century exploration as they venture deep into the far reaches of the ice to Zodiac cruise, kayak and hike the tundra,” the line says in promotional materials.

After Ellesmere, days 13 and 14 of the 22-day sailing are marked on the itinerary as simply “Farther North”.

In addition to viewing spectacles like tidewater glaciers, activities during the cruise will include visits to Inuit communities and remote archaeological sites and watching polar bears and walruses. The cruise
