Deal expected on major US airline merger

US Airways and American Airlines set to announce deal

US Airways and American Airlines are likely to win approval to create the world’s biggest carrier, Reuters quotes antitrust lawyers as saying. However, air-traffic regulators are expected to focus on concessions to preserve competition in Washington, Charlotte, Dallas and other airports where the two airlines are dominant.
American and US Airways are in the last stages of negotiating an $11 billion merger. If approved, it would be the third major airline merger in the USA since 2008. Consumers are worried that the deal will result in fewer choices and higher air fares.
