Defiant Lufthansa ups capacity, sells IT business

Swiss continues destinations to winter, including Copenhagen

Lufthansa will be flying with 2.9% more seats during the 2014-15 winter season, more than its earlier forecast for a 2% increase. The number of flights is actually falling by 2.9%, but bigger aircraft is resulting in a capacity rise, measured in available seat-kilometres.

At first, Lufthansa planned to raise capacity by 4% for the winter schedules but then halved those plans when high capacity in the first half of the year put pressure on prices.

Lufthansa traditionally serves business routes, but this year it is flying to more leisure destinations than before, including Marrakesh, Split and the Canaries.

Lufthansa Group said in a statement it would fly to 260 destinations this winter, with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, Lufthansa and Swiss making 18,900 flights a week. On average, a Lufthansa Group aircraft is taking off somewhere around the world every 32 seconds.

Swiss will increase services to São Paolo to ten weekly connections. Its timetable will also include a daily connection to Los Angeles. In Geneva, the airline is continuing many destinations from its summer flight timetable throughout the winter, including Copenhagen.

In related news, Lufthansa has announced it will sell its IT infrastructure unit to IBM, including an outsourcing agreement for the services. The move is part of ongoing restructuring and cost cutting to better compete with Gulf and low-cost rivals.
