Demand fails to match capacity rise at SAS

SAS Group trends mapped in April 2013 traffic figures

SAS Group reports that its “traffic continued to develop as expected” during April with passenger numbers growing mainly on shorter routes. It carried 2.5 million passengers during the month, up 6.5% on the same month a year earlier. Capacity (ASK) was up 10.4% and traffic (RPK) up 1.5%. However, SAS Group’s load factor fell 6.1 percentage points to 69.5%.
“Despite good response to the increased capacity, demand did not match and the load was lower, due to the timing of Easter and also due to the launch of eight European routes since March 31 where demand still is seasonally relatively low,” the airline admitted in a statement.
Currency-adjusted yield for March was down 2.7% against the previous year and RASK was down 3.9% due to the timing of Easter. For April, SAS said that the change in yield was expected to be positive and the change in RASK to be in line with last year. “Overall, market demand continues to be good”, the group said.
