Denmark tries to lure top LGBTIQ events

Combined events could bring more than half a million visitors
A bid to bring two major LGBTIQ events to Copenhagen has taken a big step forward as the Danish government joins the campaign.
More than half a million visitors could congregate in the Danish capital if it succeeds in hosting the two top events – the cultural festival WorldPride and the EuroGames sporting event – under the umbrella title Copenhagen 2021.
They have the potential to be a “historic event that unites sport, culture and the fight for equality in Copenhagen,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
“Denmark is a world leader in regard to LGBTI rights, and therefore an ideal host,” Karen Ellegaard, minister for equality, wrote in the statement.
Happy Copenhagen is the organisation behind the drive to attract the events. Its chief secretary, Lars Christian Østergreen, says that government support is a significant development.
“It is necessary in relation to the bidding process that we have the support of the government. But it is also important that the government shows its support for the community,” he told the news agency Ritzau. “It is also important that there is awareness about the battle we have to fight every day.”
The EuroGames has already been held in Copenhagen, in 2003. A decision on where to host the 2021 version will be made in March 2018. The 2021 host of WorldPride will be chosen this coming October.
