DFDS ferry arrives on time despite explosion

Sailing of ferry Crown Seaways still gets to Oslo on time

An explosion and engine failure disrupted a sailing from Copenhagen to Oslo on Sunday night aboard the DFDS ferry Crown Seaways – but the ship still managed to make it to Oslo on time.

The explosion, which occurred five hours into the crossing at 21:30, could be felt throughout the ship and smoke swept through the decks. No one was injured.

The ferry company later told media there had been a crankcase explosion in one of the ship’s engines.

“One of the ferry’s four engines is out of order, but the ship usually only sails on three,” DFDS spokesperson Gert Jakobsen told the newspaper Frederiksborg Amts Avis. “Everything is under control and we will arrive in Oslo on time.”

The ferry did indeed arrive on time the following morning.
