Dresden urges tourists to return

Waters of the River Elbe are receding

The flood-hit German city of Dresden is ready to welcome the return of tourists, the city’s marketing department says. The waters of the River Elbe are receding and the city has stopped its highest state of alert.
“We are greatly relieved that the high water was largely kept away from the city, thanks in no small measure to our excellent and extensive flood defences,” Bettina Bunge, managing director of Dresden Marketing GmbH, said. “These spared the old town of Dresden and the cultural treasures of the city from the worst of the flooding.”
The city’s hotels and guesthouses are open for business as usual and scheduled events and performances are going ahead as planned. Museums in Pillnitz Palace have reopened, which means that all the city’s cultural attractions can now be visited.
However, travellers are advised to check ahead before visiting Meissen, Pirna and Bad Schandau as some hotels, restaurants and ferries remain closed for now.
