Dubai plans tourist tax on hotel stays

“Tourism Dirham” to be charged from March 31

Dubai will charge a levy on all hotel stays, it has been announced. The “Tourism Dirham”, as it is being called, will be charged on all types of holiday accommodation from March 31.

The fee will vary between seven and 20 dirhams (€1.40 to €4) per room, per night, depending on hotel category and rating.

The measure is apparently designed to raise funds for the international promotion and marketing of the Emirate as a tourist destination.

“The introduction of the Tourism Dirham will support the continued growth of two of our economic pillars – trade and tourism – ultimately creating employment and business opportunities,” said His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, director general of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

“The revenues will support marketing and promotion of the destination, through the newly established Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, helping to ensure our continued competitiveness on the global stage.”
