E-cigarettes banned in luggage after fires

US permanently bans smoking devices from baggage
Recent incidents showing that e-cigarettes can catch fire during transport have pushed the US Transportation Department to permanently ban them from checked luggage.
Passengers can take e-cigarettes onto the plane in carry-on baggage or on their person, but must not use or charge them on flights.
“Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says in a statement. “Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent and important safety measure.”
The rule covers all battery-powered electronic smoking devices including e-pipes and e-cigars.
In August 2014, an e-cigarette in a suitcase caused a fire and the evacuation of a plane in Boston, and in January 2015, a similar fire occurred in a baggage area at Los Angeles Airport.
