Low-cost carrier will buy part of Air Berlin for €40m
The budget airline easyJet has agreed to buy part of bankrupt Air Berlin’s operations at Berlin’s Tegel Airport for €40 million, in a deal expected to close by the end of the year.
The for-now UK-based easyJet follows an objective expressed in August by leasing up to 25 A320 aircraft and will also take over slots. Together with its existing base at Berlin Schoenefeld, the move will make it the “leading airline” in the German capital, it said.
The company also wants to recruit around 1,000 Air Berlin pilots and cabin crew over the coming months, to be employed on German contracts.
The price it will be paying excludes “potential start-up and transitional operating costs”, it said, adding that it would operate a reduced timetable at Tegel for the remainder of the winter and a full schedule from summer 2018.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa will be buying 81 of Air Berlin’s 144 aircraft and hire up to 3,000 of its employees.
