Egypt: state of emergency after attacks

Double suicide bombing kills at least 44 people
A three-month state of emergency has been declared throughout Egypt following a double suicide bombing of two Coptic churches in the cities of Alexandria and Tanta that killed at least 44 people.
Egypt’s president Abdul Fattah al-Sisi announced the measure, which allows authorities to make arrests without warrants and search people’s homes.
A continuous state of emergency had previously been in place for 31 years until the ousting of Hosni Mubarak in 2011. It was a primary source of grievance of demonstrators during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.
So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the Palm Sunday blasts and has warned of more attacks against the Copts. Sisi countered the war against the jihadists would be “long and painful”.
The suicide bombers targeted St George’s Church in Tanta, killing 27 people, then, a few hours later, St Mark’s in Alexandria, killing 17. They are the latest is a series of deadly attacks against Coptic churches, including one last December at the cathedral in Cairo that killed 25 people. A visit by Pope Francis is expected at the end of April.
